Yellowstone’s rattlesnake rampage: rip wheeler battles a serpent surge

Forget grizzlies and cattle wars – the biggest threat to the Dutton Ranch’s expansion in Dutton Ranch isn’t a rival family, it's a terrifying, writhing army of 40,000 rattlesnakes.

A deadly debut

According to Rip Wheeler himself, played with a gruff practicality by Cole Hauser, the initial filming location was effectively shut down after a reconnaissance mission uncovered a veritable serpent’s paradise. He recounted the story to Kelly Clarkson, admitting they had to relocate entirely – a logistical nightmare, even by Yellowstone standards. ‘Weren’t you filming down somewhere where there was like a [rattlesnake] den?’ Kelly Reilly asked, and Hauser’s response was blunt: ‘I don’t want to give it away, there might be a train station this year, but that particular location we were at, we actually were going to go from there at night and got turned away.’

Director Christina Alexandra Voros reportedly discovered a significant population of the venomous reptiles – roughly 50, to be precise – setting the stage for some genuinely unsettling scenes. The sheer volume of snakes presented a significant operational challenge, forcing a hasty re-shoot.

The infamous scene depicting Rip disposing of a deceased individual down an abandoned mine shaft, a pivotal moment in the series' opening episodes, was undoubtedly influenced by this environmental hurdle. It’s a grim detail, and one that highlights the brutal realities of life on the ranch – and the lengths Rip will go to maintain a semblance of order. The strategic disposal, intended to quell unrest, ironically seems destined to escalate the situation further.

Production, understandably, took the threat seriously. Six animal wranglers were deployed to clear the areas before filming commenced, a testament to the potential consequences of a snake encounter. Kelly Reilly vividly described her experience: ‘I’m in these stiletto heels, running through fields, and I’m just praying, ‘Please let them have got all the snakes in this vicinity.’”

Beth’s list: snakes added to the portfolio

Adding a darkly humorous layer to this ordeal, the reveal that Beth Dutton’s only acknowledged shortcomings are ‘fear and losing money’ – delivered with her signature sardonic wit – underscores the bizarre prioritization of the situation. It seems even the Duttons are grappling with a new, decidedly scaled, adversary. It’s a fitting addition to her already formidable list of vulnerabilities.
