While the exterior of the school depicted, Cheetham Hall, was a Hertfordshire hotel, the pivotal classroom scenes were shot in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city in northern Spain. This surprising location was chosen for its authentic feel, according to Channel 5 executive Steve Edge, who portrays the lead teacher’s husband.

“It’s a very Spanish place with very few tourists,” Edge commented. The cast spent two months immersed in the Basque Country, a region famed for its dramatic landscapes. Rochenda Sandall, who plays fellow teacher Tessa Stewart, added, “We were out there for two months…so all of the Basque Country was available to us.”

The interior of the school was cleverly disguised as an old church repurposed into an art college, a transformation that left Sandall astonished. “It didn’t really look anything like my school!” she quipped. The unconventional setting adds another layer of intrigue to the already tense storyline, suggesting that the isolation and unique atmosphere of the Spanish countryside contributed to the characters' escalating conflicts.
